Narendra Modi is an Indian politician who has had a remarkable journey in politics. As of my last update in September 2021, here is an overview of his political journey up until that point:
Narendra Damodardas Modi was born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, a town in the state of Gujarat, India.
He belonged to a modest family of grocers.
Entry into Politics:
Modi joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization, at a young age and became an active member.
In the 1970s, he got involved in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS.
In 1985, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a prominent right-wing political party in India.
Rise in the BJP:
Modi's organizational skills and dedication to the party's ideology helped him rise through the ranks in the BJP.
In 2001, he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat, a western Indian state.
Controversial Term as Chief Minister:
Modi's tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat was marred by controversies, particularly concerning the 2002 Gujarat riots. The riots resulted in significant communal violence and loss of lives.
Critics accused him of not doing enough to control the violence and of having a biased approach towards certain communities.
Prime Ministerial Candidacy and Role as Prime Minister:
In 2014, Narendra Modi was named the BJP's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Indian general elections.
The BJP won the elections with a landslide victory, and Modi became the 14th Prime Minister of India.
He was re-elected as Prime Minister in the 2019 general elections.
Key Initiatives as Prime Minister:
Modi's tenure as Prime Minister has been marked by several ambitious initiatives and policy changes. Some of the prominent ones include:
"Make in India" campaign to promote manufacturing and investment in India.
"Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" (Clean India Mission) to promote cleanliness and sanitation.
"Digital India" initiative to enhance digital infrastructure and promote digital services.
"Goods and Services Tax" (GST) implementation to reform India's indirect tax system.
"Jan Dhan Yojana" to increase financial inclusion by providing bank accounts to the unbanked population.
"Ayushman Bharat" scheme for providing health insurance coverage to vulnerable sections of society.
Modi has been active in promoting India's international relations and engaging with other countries on economic, political, and strategic fronts.
It's important to note that as a public figure, Narendra Modi's journey in politics is subject to different perspectives and opinions. His leadership has evoked strong reactions both within India and internationally. As of my last update in September 2021, his political journey was still ongoing, and he remained a prominent figure in Indian politics.
